Michigan Humane Adoption Process — Step-by-Step Guide

Adopting a pet from Michigan Humane is an exciting and rewarding experience. We are here to help you find a loving companion that fits your lifestyle and home. Below is a clear, step-by-step overview of how the adoption process works.

Confirm Eligibility

To adopt from Michigan Humane, you must be at least 18 years old with valid photo ID.

Find Your Potential Pet

Start by exploring pets available for adoption:

  • Browse online at the Michigan Humane adoptable pets page.
  • Visit in person at one of our adoption centers: Detroit, Westland, or partner locations such as Sterling Heights Petco and select Premier Pet Supply locations.

If you see a pet you’re interested in online, you can call 866-MHUMANE for additional information.

What to bring with you:

  • Valid driver’s license or State ID with your current address.
  • All household members who will live with the pet (recommended and sometimes required).
  • Any existing dogs in your home for a dog-to-dog meet-and-greet (recommended and sometimes required).

Meet with an Adoption Counselor

After you select a pet:

  • A trained adoption counselor will talk with you about your home, lifestyle, and what you’re looking for in a pet.
  • They will review the pet’s medical history, personality, and answer your questions.
  • You will have time to spend with the animal before making your decision.

Complete the Adoption

When you’re ready to adopt:

  • Plan for about one hour to complete all paperwork.
  • You will receive your new pet’s medical history, microchip information, and guidance on follow-up veterinary care.
  • Accepted payment methods include cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover.

If the animal is already spayed or neutered, they can go home with you the same day. If not, the surgery will be scheduled at our on-site veterinary center on the next available weekday, and your pet will go home after that procedure is completed.

Out-of-State Adoptions

Adopters from outside Michigan are welcome, but must:

  • Travel to a Michigan Humane adoption center to complete the process in person, including any required sterilization procedures.
  • Understand that, for health and safety reasons, animals cannot be shipped.
