At Michigan Humane, we know how powerful the bond is between people and their pets. For veterans and active-duty service members, a companion animal can be more than just a pet — it can bring comfort, joy, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Michigan Humane for Military is our way of saying thank you to those who have served our country. Through this special program, we help veterans and military personnel welcome a loving companion into their home — while saving the life of an animal in need.

What the Program Offers

Fee-Waived Adoptions

Eligible veterans and active-duty military adopters can bring home any pet in our care (including kittens and puppies) without paying the standard adoption fee.

Complete Adoption Support Package

Michigan Humane adoption package includes pet sterilization, age-appropriate vaccines, deworming and more.

First-Year Veterinary Discounts

Once your adoption is complete, you and your pet are eligible for discounted veterinary care at any of the three Michigan Humane veterinary centers.

Who Is Eligible

To qualify for the Michigan Humane for Military program, you must provide:

  • Proof of honorable military service, such as:
    • DD Form 214
    • DD Form 256
  • A valid state driver’s license or ID card showing your current address.

Tips for a Great Adoption Experience

To help you find the perfect match:

  • Bring your whole family to meet the animals you’re considering.
  • If you already have a dog at home, we suggest bringing your dog along so they can meet potential new companions.
  • Most adoptions are processed the same day — so you can begin your journey together right away!

Where the Program Applies

The fee-waived adoption and related benefits are available:

  • At all Michigan Humane shelter locations.
  • At off-site or special adoption events (as long as program requirements are met).
  • For current event listings, check our social media or contact us directly.

Important Notes

  • The fee-waived adoption is non-transferable — your new pet must live with you, the qualifying adopter.
