The most common disease in companion animals is periodontal (gum) disease, affecting at least 70% of dogs and cats over five years of age.  Puppies and kittens aren’t born with dental disease – it’s up to you to take care of their oral health. Pets need regular dental cleanings throughout their life to help prevent dental disease. Proper dental care, starting at a young age, can also help prevent health issues, such as heart or kidney disease, from appearing as the pet ages.  At the Michigan Humane veterinary centers, we will meet with you to discuss the best dental plan for your pet based on lifestyle, age and breed. That plan will most likely include a combination of at-home dental care, diet, and routine dental cleanings.  Dental cleanings are performed under general anesthesia.

Pets age faster than people and are generally considered seniors around seven years of age. As your pet grows older, their healthcare needs change, and subtle differences in behavior, appetite, or activity may signal health concerns rather than normal aging.

Your puppy or kitten visit includes a complete nose-to-tail physical exam to check overall health and detect any early concerns.

This visit is also a great time to discuss:

We will review your pet’s recommended vaccine and deworming schedule and help create a care plan tailored to their needs. Please bring any medical or vaccination records you have.

Whether for routine wellness and preventive care, or for an urgent, life-threatening medical emergency, our in-house diagnostics center allows us to provide you with quick and timely evaluations followed by an immediate response to your pet’s medical needs. Our diagnostic capabilities include annual heartworm testing, intestinal parasite screening and general wellness blood work, to more comprehensive blood work for sick or injured pets. Also, using state-of-the-art equipment, we can perform blood pressure screenings and glaucoma tests.

When your pet isn’t feeling their best, you need answers and relief quickly. Our team can assist with a wide range of medical concerns, providing diagnosis and treatment for:

  • Acute Illness: Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or loss of appetite
  • Injury Care: Lameness, minor wounds, and soft tissue, trauma.
  • Urgent Care: Expedited appointments for conditions that require prompt attention but are not life threatening.

If your pet needs specialized treatment or equipment not available in a general practice setting, Michigan Humane may recommend a trusted veterinary specialist. After the referral visit, reports are shared with your pet’s Michigan Humane team to ensure continuity of care
