Home Deliveries Volunteer Program

What to Expect:

Volunteers assisting in this role will help reduce barriers to pet ownership by providing free deliveries of pet (& human food) directly to the homes of owners who are homebound, have limited mobility, or have limited/unreliable access to transportation. Michigan Humane believes everyone deserves to experience the love of a companion pet and should have access to the resources they need to care for them.

Become a Volunteer

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Meet at the Caplan Family Pet Pantry to load up food and supplies into their vehicle for transport.
  • After loading up, volunteers will receive a list of stops to deliver the food to in local Detroit neighborhoods.
  • Volunteers can expect to make supply drops to 4 or 6 households (homes will not necessarily be in the same neighborhood but will be located within the vicinity of each other).
  • Bags of pet food and supplies should be left on client’s porch. If yards are fenced in, supplies can be left just inside of fence.
  • Deliveries usually take about 1- 2 hours to complete.
  • Larger volunteer groups will be split up into smaller groups so they can carpool together to make supply drops.

Role Requirements:

  • Lifting multiple bags of pet food (35lbs each) and/or boxes of non-perishable food items (40 lbs each) for human consumption from Gleaners.
  • Gas mileage is not reimbursable by Michigan Humane, but is tax deductible at 14 cents per mile in Michigan.
  • Volunteers must be willing to assist Michigan Humane by serving every animal, and every person with their best self.

  • Michigan Humane flyers and an FAQ sheet with contact numbers are available to volunteers at the time of their shift. Please ask the staff if you are interested in these resources.

Reassessment:

Michigan Humane may require a volunteer reassess/retrain for a role if any of the responsibilities listed above are not met, or if volunteers are reported as conducting themselves in a way that goes against the Michigan Humane mission and values.
